Yes, it can be easily extended as per the duration of your study program. But you cannot change your university/institute for visa extension.

However please note that, you cannot change your visa category, while you are in Russia ( For-example , you cannot covert your Russian student visa into the Russian Work visa, while staying in Russia. ) For changing your visa category, you first need to exit from Russia. Then you can apply in other visa category.

So we suggest you to carry a minimum cash of $1000 to the maximum of $10000 with you. Otherwise you may face an investigation from the immigration department on airport.

Russian student visa and work visa can be extended in the same visa category.

Student visa extension depends on your study period in Russia. Whereas the extension in work visa depends on your employment contract.

However,. Russian tourist visa is not extend-able while you are in Russia. You need to exit from Russia before your visa expiry date. (Russian government MAY considers to extend your stay in Russia, as a tourist, only in case of an extreme emergency! )

You need to keep in your mind few things while applying visa of Russia outside from your home country.

First we strongly recommend you to call your nearest Russian consulate or embassy in your current location. They will ask your visa status in that current country and then tell you in detail that you can apply or you need to go back to your homeland to apply Russian visa.

Second, as per our knowledge you cannot apply Russian visa outside your country if you are having tourist or any temporary visa status. But, resident visa holders may apply outside of their home country.
